Helen Dixon, the data protection commissioner of Ireland, recently shared her insights regarding the challenges faced while implementing GDPR regulations on Tech Giants like Meta Platforms Inc. She shed light on the complexities within the European Union procedures and their impact on citizens’ privacy.
Clunky Cooperation and Legal Challenges
Dixon blamed the “clunky” European Union procedures for wasting energy, time, and money in the race to defend citizens’ privacy. She stated that the cooperation system among watchdogs across the EU is hardwired into the EU law, which makes it difficult for individual watchdogs to take action against tech giants without the intervention of other watchdogs, leading to legal challenges and delays.
Last-Minute Political Changes
Dixon also expressed her disappointment with the last-minute political changes made to the legislation, which complicated the implementation process. She believes things could have been smoother without these changes, resulting in faster handling of cases.
Despite the challenges, Dixon has forced firms to pay €2.8 billion ($3.1 billion) for violating the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. She levied the largest GDPR fine to date, slapping Meta with a record €1.2 billion bill and giving the firm a deadline to stop shipping users’ data to the US. Dixon is stepping down from her post as Ireland’s data protection commissioner next month after leading the Data Protection Commission for the past decade.
